Community Spotlight: Wandering View Photography

So I believe in community over competition. Like... REALLY believe in it. There is often this odd sense of jealousy with photographers. While the everyday client may not see it, I do. It's very common for photographers to make fun of and bully newer photographers in online groups. It's something I don't want to be a part of. Instead, I choose to cultivate the community by offering lessons, renting my studio space out to others, and managing a group for other photographers.

Today, I am taking it a step further by featuring fellow photographer Amanda Odle of Wandering View Photography. I had the pleasure of meeting Amanda at a styled shoot organized by Rocket City Rover (which btw, is this hella cool 15 person bike that goes on bar crawls).

While we didn't have a lot of time to chat that day, we have been in touch quite a bit ever since. When someone is looking for a boudoir photographer, she tags me. If someone is looking for a family photographer, I tag her. See why community over competition is so amazing?

I recently interviewed Amanda and here's what she had to say....

What type of photography do you specialize in?

Amanda: "I would say weddings and families mostly. It's what has gravitated my way since I started! I love everything about a wedding day and love being goofy for baby smiles so it works! I love capturing special moments/things in peoples lives.

I am always truly open to learning more and more. I recently took on a few head shot projects. That's been a great learning experience. I would love to also have a studio one day. For the winter months and to maybe one day add animal portraits to my portfolio!"

What sets you apart from other photographers?

Amanda: "Honestly I don't know! I think we are all unique in our own way. We are all making art and doing what we love!"

How do you use photography to give back to the community?

Amanda: "I love yoga. Like really love! My studio needed a facelift in marketing. I took new photos of the studio and helped update the website. My yoga community has become such an inspiration and a huge part of my heart. The practice helps me daily in so many ways! I wanted to help them! I want to help spread the word about something that is so dear to me."

What was your first camera?

Amanda: "My very first was a little point and shoot we got for our honeymoon! Then when we had our son I was determined to learn more. My husband bought me a Nikon D40, which I later dropped off my car and broke!"

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

Amanda: "HANDS DOWN ANTARCTICA. No question. I LOVE penguins and I want to travel there and photograph them ALL! I used to want to be a marine biologist. Till science........then I knew Id never make it. Next best thing?? Hanging out and taking their pictures!"
